On July 16, 2010 an action, science fiction film, Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Dileep Rao, Tom Berenger, Michael Caine, is released in the USA.

Christopher Nolan has crafted a movie that has gone beyond dazzling and strategized both the sequence of events and thematically.  Inception obliges the audience to take in an anthology of rules, exemptions, sites, occupations, and abilities in order to understand the text, let alone the intriguing subtext.  Nolan’s work of genius is the first major blockbuster in over a decade that’s commanded extreme viewer absorption, raised attentive and multifaceted ideas, and wrapped the whole thing all in a breathlessly electrifying action film.  Inception may be intricate, but simply put it’s one of the most excellent movies of the year.

Inception requires so much elucidation that a lesser director would have forced theaters to dispense pamphlets to audience members in order to explicate the complicated world he’s developed.  During the first draft of this review, I realized I had spent three paragraphs merely trying to explain the plot.  I will simply avoid this exposition and present the movie’s basic principle.  Inception centers on a lineup of personages guided by an “extractor” whose name is Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) who, in the course of the use of a special device, creates the dreams of a target and uses those dreams to embed an idea so that the target will make a conclusion beneficial to the personage who hired the team.

Why is it so challenging to elucidate the plot in depth?  This film has a stratum of dreams on top of dreams to the point where an inimitable relic called a “totem” is crucial in order to determine if they are still dreaming.  Then you have individuals that are placed in exacting roles in their dreams, like ‘architect’, and ‘forger’. These dream characters are used to accomplish whatever job they are being used for.

Every one of the dreams has imperatives: dying in a dream forces the dreamer to wake up; delving too deeply into a mind can be the source of an unending slumber called “Limbo”; using memories to build up dreams is perilous because it can distort the line connecting dreams and reality.  In addition, intruding in the dreams of another will force the dreamer’s “projections” to assail the intruders.  And these explanations only characterize a tiny percentage of the terminology, rules, exceptions, or details that were crucial for establishing the world of Inception.

But it’s not a confusing movie if the audience is devoting their full attention.  There’s a lot to take in, but the imaginative and thoughtful delivery of elucidation keeps the viewer riveted regardless of the amount of information required in order to understand the foundation, locale, and stratagem. This movie is definitely for the mentally mature audience who can understand the complexity of the concepts that have been incorporated into this movie with seamless finesse.

It tends to be the case that lots of rules create lots of ambiguities.  Filmmakers can use these to tantalize and let viewers fill in the leaps of logics. Inception is built on possibilities and the boldness of pursuing those possibilities.  The film merits, commands, and rewards duplicate viewings, but from your first viewing you can grasp the events on screen and how they interact with each other as long as you force yourself to be an active viewer.  This movie is well worth a second, third and even fourth viewing.

Inception features one of the most excellent fight scenes on record.  Take a split second to mull over that in the entire history of cinema. In every fight scene that has ever taken place, the one in this movie is amongst the best.  Watching a fight without gravity is incredible. The fight scene in Inception has no gravity to defy, and Arthur (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has to work out how to achieve his purpose while fighting off projections.

The physical scale of this movie is astonishing. Everything that we identify as impossible appears entirely natural.  It’s not adequate to say that the cinematography is dazzling, or that the sound design is magnificent or that this is one of composer Hans Zimmer’s unprecedented best scores. You’ve in no way seen anything like Inception, and you’ll crave to see it again and again. This movie will intrigue and attract you back to viewing it because you will pick up more nuances of the story each time you see it. Revisiting this movie is a pure delight on an intellectual level.

Rarely is a film that is so inextricably entwined with a particular director’s themes and visions concurrently appealing on so many levels.  Inception is a heist movie, making this movie thrilling and stimulating on a primeval level.  It soon becomes clear that the movie will engage the audience’s mind, and on an echelon almost no recent and mainstream film has managed.  Yet Inception also maintains a human and moral center, in the character of Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio).

The care with which Christopher and Jonathan crafted the screenplay is manifest.  The story is tight, detailed, and complex. With Nolan’s skillful directorial touch these scenes are understated, natural, and extremely moving. The two screenwriters also intertwine complex themes into the fabric of the story. The touch is again luminous and responsive; the characters don’t pose existential queries about the nature of realism and one’s existence.  Instead, these ideas flow logically from the story, from the heist and its many layers of depth and deception.

The special effects, too, are flawless and essentially incorporated into the story.  Never does it feel forced or pretentious, and there aren’t any moments that exist to simply show off the craft of the special effects creators.  The effects are incredible, and a couple of times almost awe-inspiring.  The movie as a whole is dazzling, meticulous and flawlessly colored.  The Nolan brothers once more raise intriguing questions about the nature of humanity and realism and depend on their storytelling to affirm their case and force the audience to work out feasible answers on their own.  This movie is worth seeing several times, and I recommend this movie to adults that are looking for a movie experience that will keep them thinking for the rest of the summer.
