On August 20, 2010 a family comedy film, Nanny McPhee Returns, starring Ralph Fiennes, Emma Thompson, Maggie Smith, Rhys Ifans, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Daniel Mays, is released in USA.

This movie is a sequel to the original movie, titled Nanny McPhee. The movie is a children’s movie that is comedy and fantasy. It is much like a fairy tale in that the basis of the movie is a set of lessons which Nanny McPhee is sent to teach the naughty children. The character of Nanny McPhee is based on a character from a children’s book series written by Christianna Brand.

Nanny McPhee, herself, is a rather interesting character. She comes from somewhere, but the audience never really knows where. She has some strange powers that allow her to do things that defy logic and possibility. She also has a look about her that is rather unpleasant – in the beginning. As the story unfolds and the children learn their lessons, Nanny McPhee slowly transforms, losing her warts, large nose and snaggle tooth, to become quite a beautiful lady.

In Nanny McPhee Returns the central plot is set in the 20th century around a time of war. A mother of three children whose husband is off fighting in the war is at her wit’s end. She is trying to keep up the family farm and handle her three rambunctious children. When her brother’s two children come to stay with her, things get worse.

As Nanny McPhee always does, she shows up where she is needed. Through a series of adventures and magic, Nanny McPhee works to teach the children five important lessons. The five lessons that Nanny McPhee are teaching the children are to stop fighting, to share, to work together, to be brave and to have faith.

Nanny McPhee is able to teach the children these lessons throughout the story as they encounter various situations, such as the uncle gambling away the farm and trying to get their mother to sell it and being told their father has died in the war. Once the children fully learn the lessons that Nanny McPhee has to teach them, she leaves. Nanny McPhee has a simple rule that she follows “When you need me, but do not want me, then I will stay. When you want me, but do not need me, then I have to go.”

In the end of the movie, the children do learn the lessons, all the subplots are wrapped up and their father, who did not really die in the war, comes home. Nanny McPhee, as in the first movie, slips away as the family is left welcoming home their father.

The main characters of the movie are Nanny McPhee, Isabel Green, Mrs. Docherty, Norman, Megsie, Vincent, Cyril, Celia and Uncle Phil. Nanny McPhee is played by the writer of the movie, Emma Thompson. Isabel Green is Maggie Gyllenhaal. The children, Norman, Megsie, Vincent, Cyril and Celia are played by Asa Butterfiled, Lil Woods, Oscar Steer, Eros Vlahos and Rose Taylor-Ritson, respectively. Mrs. Docherty is played by Maggie Smith and Uncle Phil is played by Rhys Ifans.

Emma Thompson was Nanny McPhee is the original movie and is an Oscar winning actress that has had roles in movies such as Howards End, Sense and Sensibility and an Education. She also was in two Harry Potter movies where she acted alongside Rhys Ifans, who played Lord Voldemort and Maggie Smith who played Minerva McGonagall. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a respected actress known for her roles in The Dark Knight and A Dangerous Mind.

The first Nanny McPhee movie was a hit with children and adults, so it is no surprise that Nanny McPhee Returns has also done well at the box office. The reviews from critics are a little harsh on the movie, but viewers seem to think that the sequel was just as great as the original; some viewer reviews even suggest it is better. Many refer to Nanny McPhee as a modern Mary Poppins and it is a character that they never get tired of.

Reviews have praised the actors for portraying the characters in a way that brings them to life and really enables you to connect with the storyline. Much praise has come for the two children who played the cousins, Cyril and Celia, who are newcomers to movies. Thompson proves again that she can create characters who are very real and a storyline that will resonate with viewers. Her portrayal of Nanny McPhee is just as superb as in the original movie.

Parents liked the fact that the movie did not stray from the original plot of Nanny McPhee teaching the children important lessons. There was some talk that the movie’s length is a bit long for the children it is targeting. About and hour and half in length, this movie may not hold the attention of every child. However, children seem to become captivated by Nanny McPhee, so the length has not proven to be a huge issue.

There was also a concern by critics that there are too many subplots to the movie that take away from the idea that the main plot of the movie and the main job of Nanny McPhee is to teach these children to behave. Viewers, though, didn’t seem to mind the distractions and thought they played well with the main plot and added in scenes that were entertaining.

Overall, Nanny McPhee Returns hits a high note. This movie is recommended to anyone who watched and loved the original Nanny McPhee. It will charm you, delight you, entertain you and maybe even teach you a few things. Nanny McPhee Returns will have you laughing, cringing and probably make you shed a few tears. It is a winner with both adults and children, so the recommendation is to go see this movie.
