On August 20, 2010 a horror film, Piranha 3-D, starring Elisabeth Shue, Steven R., McQueen, Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss, Christopher Lloyd, Jerry O’Connell, Dina Meyer, Jessica Szohr, Riley Steele, is released in USA.

There are many films which are being remade and the question always is are they as good as the original. One such film is Piranha. Although it is now in 3D many people are questioning if it is as good as the original which was made in 1978. Remakes always have a lot to live up to and this film is no different it is set in the same style as the original and it promises to offer you a fantastic summer film.

It is spring break in Arizona and the lakes are getting ready for the increased amount of young people looking for fun, sun and drunken antics. The numbers very quickly rise from 5000 to 50,000 inhabitants at this time of year. In good old classic film fashion the teenagers have far more to worry about than summer frolic. A sudden underwater tremor unleashes thousands of prehistoric piranhas into the lakes.

Needless to say the teenagers have to work together to save their lives and escape from the terrifying piranhas before they become fish food. The heroine of the film has to risk her own life to save her family before it is too late and of course she does, but not before many teenagers and town folks die in gruesome and horrible eating frenzies by the piranhas that are taking over the town. Although you are promised amazing technology and fantastic 3D this is lacking in the film and you can watch it quite happily without it. The piranhas make this film even more terrifying and they are brought into your world by the 3D element.

There are some films that the 3D world really works with and this is one of those, it has some amazing gory scenes where you will be truly amazed. It has every element of the original film including the bad jokes, guts, bloods and of course breasts. The comedy in the film is great and this will keep you hooked if nothing else does. Overall it is a fun film which is very watchable and although some of the scenes let you down you can quite happily watch it until the end. You won’t feel the urge to get up and leave the cinema and it will also keep you awake throughout the whole film.

The eating and biting scenes are very similar to the original film and the director insisted that the teenagers were filmed thrashing around with plenty of underwater shots of the piranhas. These piranhas look very real and are really scary they make you feel that everything they do is very possible and sometimes this is scarier than anything else. There is one particular scene where the piranhas are savaging a group of swimmers which is incredibly gory and will have you looking away from the screen. As the teenagers scramble to safety the water is red and there are pieces of flesh falling from their bodies making it very lifelike.

It is very apparent that the special effects have been done by one of the best in this field and this is one of the highlights of the film. The professional aspects of this remake save it from being very boring and cheesy. If you want a light hearted summer film with great special effects, blood and annoying teenagers getting eaten then this is the film for you. You need to approach it with the light hearted humor it was intended to create and appreciate the work which went into the special effects and the amazing piranhas.

The film is directed by legend Alexandre Aja who is most well known for the hills have eyes he brought his own unique style to this remake and ensured that he cast it well. This French director began his directorial debut at the age of 18 and has gone from strength to strength. He loves directing darker horrors and is also well known for his Manga series.  The cast were well chosen for their acting abilities and of course their looks. When you see Richard Dreyfuss staring alongside Kelly Brook then you know it will be a good film.

As with all of this style of films you need to watch it with a light hearted approach it is never going to win an Oscar. It is however the perfect film to watch with a group of friends who want some light hearted humor on a Saturday night. The acting is what you would expect and the jokes very slapstick but overall it is enjoyable. The 3D effects could have been better as the piranhas were amazing and you should have felt that they were really there with you.  The film could have been made in 2D and you would have had the same enjoyment factor as it is your imagination that will scare you the most.

Although the producers have claimed this is the 3D film of the year I feel that there will be better before the year is finished and if you ignore the fact that it is in 3D then you will have a clearer idea of the film as an overall production. This film has everything and is very watchable some may say boring but that is those people who want an epic tale every time they enter the cinema. For a fun film that will certainly have you jumping out of your seat this is the film for you. The next time you are near the water it is very likely to make you think twice about jumping in that lake anytime soon.
