On July 9, 2010 a science fiction, action and horror film, Predators, starring Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Laurence Fishburne, Danny Trejo, Walton Goggins, Oleg Taktarov, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Louis Ozawa Changchien, is released in the US theatres.

This latest twist on the classic, The Most Dangerous Game, where the predators become the prey, opens with a collection of strangers that awaken in an isolated locality only to find they are pawns in a life and death game that has been devised by the captor, who is mystifying. This collection of strangers quickly realizes that they must form an alliance if they hope to stay alive, which is ironic. They are all killers.

They soon comprehend that they’re not on Earth at all but rather on an alien planet, in a game preserve where they’re the prey. A battle of wits ensues with the Predators. Can Royce and Co. outwit their hunters long enough to escape from the Predators’ planet?

‘Predators’ is one of this summer’s most unexpectedly pleasurable movies. It’s an unshakeable, if somewhat unexceptional follow-up, but one that’s all the same the contiguous in spirit and implementation to the 1987 original. As the most excellent Predator movie since the first film, Predators successfully expunges the abhorrent recollection of Predator 2. It makes the eponymous alien cool and terrifying again, and restores the series to its gritty and gory roots.

One of the best judgments made here was to set the story on the Predators’ hunting planet, even if it does give the impression of being a lot like Hawaii or Honduras. That in point of fact helps elucidate why the Predator chooses Latin America for the primary film. It was like home sweet home to him! As in the original, this movie takes its time to unveil the Predators, launching its multi-national cast of human characters (a.k.a. Predator fodder) previous to bringing in the ostensible man-hunters. This episode also introduces us to the social hierarchy on the Predator world, where Super Predators actually stalk and persecute the “regular” Predators we’ve known of thus far. There are also “Predator dogs,” which are actually a lot cooler and scarier than they sound.

Brody is fine as the anti-hero whose perception of how to hunt and kill men makes him understand the Predators more than he cares to acknowledge. One negative characteristic all the same is that Brody verbalizes in a hoarse “tough guy movie voice” all the way through, which is a bit cliché seeing as how Christian Bale has elevated that to an art form.

Laurence Fishburne appears in a cameo as a survivor who’s been marooned for years on the Predators’ hunting world. And while Noland begins as a man who has projected into his own personal Joseph Conrad-like heart of darkness, he eventually becomes more analogous to Tim Robbins in War of the Worlds.

Grace’s role isn’t as large as you might expect, but he lends a darkly comic relief to the scenes he’s in. Goggins virtually steals the show as the sociopath that is given a new lease on life. While there weren’t as many imaginative kills here as there may well have been, director and the writer have crafted an audience pleaser but a recognizable Predator movie that parallels many of the beats of the original film even as it hones your enthusiasm for more movies featuring everyone’s most wanted intergalactic hunter.

The Predator species epitomizes cultures from numerous parts of our own world yet today. The “hunter/gatherer” frame of mind is one that we in the civilized world observe as being “primitive”, but is still put into practice in countless parts of the world in the present day. A young alien, or in the Predators case a ‘Yautja’, is sent out to stalk commendable opponents and bring back proof of his kill in the form of a trophy to his tribe or clan. The more trophies you have, the better of a combatant you are considered and therefore have more “status” in your clan. The predator species also incorporates parts of Japanese culture where it is an honor to fight to the death against a worthy adversary in one on one battle. The humans who live to tell the tale are viewed by the Predators as being elite warriors and are spoken about among their species with honor and reverence. It’s a culture that’s as uncomplicated as it is interesting.

In a season of remakes Predators without doubt lives up to what’s anticipated of it. It’s a re-imagining of the classic 80’s action movie which had Arnie take the reigns as the leader of a super band of commandos being hunted by extra terrestrials in the middle of foliage of the planet and ended up spawning quite a franchise, consisting of a sequel, and 2 movie mash ups, the Alien vs. Predator films. Fans of the original and followers of the charter can be forgiven for being somnolent of this remake (after all, I was), but believe me, Predators is the best in the series ever since the original.

The movie certainly had big shoes to fill so at the start standing on its own merits was to its advantage. The crew was smart enough not to try to top the first move or change up so much it was unrecognizable. Predators is a stimulating shot in the arm to a nearly dead series, and stands out in the movie remakes and sequels that Hollywood is churning out. For what it’s devised to be, an action blockbuster popcorn flick, it definitely conveys.

This action packed movie has good visuals, a lot of suspense and enough creativity to make it one of the more entertaining movies of the summer. I give this movie a definite thumb up for family (adult) viewing. This movie is well worth spending the money for. So grab your pop corn and your soda pop, kick off your shoes and get ready to experience this movie in a home theater soon. Your experience will thrill you and everyone who is watching the movie with you. This brings you back to the days when the matinee was great filler for Saturday afternoons in a small town. Now you can have your matinee any time you want with this movie.
