On May 28, 2010 an action film, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina, is released in Unites States of America.

The Plot

From the Producers of “Pirates of the Caribbean” comes a new film about fantasy, adventure and power. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is based in the sixth century with a setting in the Persian Empire. This movie transports you to that time for an adventure you won’t soon forget. You will enjoy plenty of action and drama as the main character Dastan tries to save the world from the destruction of the Sands of Time.

The movie is a story about Dastan who starts off as a street urchin, ends up being adopted by the king, fights in the royal army where he recovers the mythical Dagger of Time, a powerful tool that can transport the owner back in time, and is framed for the murder of the king, the man he calls father. Dastan is forced to flee in order to try to clear his name and capture the person who really did kill his father.

Dastan flees with Princess Tamina and the Dagger of Time. On the first night, Tamina attempts to kill Dastan so she can have possession of the dagger, but Dastan uses the dagger to save himself and realizes its powers. This leads him to discover that the dagger was probably the motive for his father murder. He realizes that his brother, Tus, is likely the one who is responsible.

Dastan and Tamina then begin to work together and take off on their journey. Along the way they have many adventures and meet many interesting people. At one point, bandits try to take the dagger and Dastan to Tus, who has since been crowned king. Fortunately, Dastan escapes.

Dastan does decide to return to Persia for his father’s funeral. At this time he tries convince his uncle that he is innocent. During this conversation, though, he notices something that leads him to realize it was his uncle who killed his father, not his brother. Nizam realizes that Dastan has him figured out and tries everything to have Dastan killed.

Dastan realizes that the dagger in combination with the Sands of Time is what his uncle is after. The Sands of Time is an hourglass that can be used to destroy the world. When the dagger is used to open the hourglass and release the sands, the world will be destroyed. Together the dagger and the Sand of Time can be very damaging. However, once the dagger is used, it can then be used to go as far back in time as the person desires.

Dastan continues to work to keep his evil uncle away from the Sands of Time. Eventually, Dastan finds himself facing his uncle and has no choice but to open the Sands of Time. Upon doing so, Dastan returns to the battle before his father was killed. Using everything he has learned, Dastan is able to reveal his uncle’s plan to betray the king. Everything that had happened never happens. Instead the dagger, the hourglass and the empire are all safe. It is suggested that everything that happened was Dastan’s destiny and a plan of the Gods.

The Cast

The Prince of Persia is directed by Mike Newell, who also directed “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” The cast is very well chosen, including amazing actors like Jake Gyllenhaal as the hero Dastan and Sir Ben Kingsley as the evil uncle, Nizam. Gyllenhaal is best known for his performance in “Brokeback Mountain”. Kingsley is a four time Oscar nominee Hollywood legend, known for performances that span decades. The movie also stars Gemma Arerton as Tamina. Arerton starred in “Clash of the Titans” before taking the role in Prince of Persia.

The Review

This movie has gotten lukewarm reviews from critics, which seems to be common these days. It is the moviegoers who really have something to say about this epic tale. The general consensus about Prince of Persia is that it is an action packed adventure that will hold your interest and have you rooting for the good guys to win.

Those who have played the Prince of Persia video games will immediately recognize elements from the game within the movie. It is like the games come to life on the big screen. It is an action packed movie that is in the same vein as other Arabian fantasy type movies. If you love action and adventure then this movie will be great entertainment.

As for the technical aspects of the movie, the acting is well done, the editing is good and the score is amazing. The only complaints were the overuse of slow motion effects and slightly bad writing when it comes to the romantic tension between Dastan and Tamina. The experience overall won’t leave you disappointed.

This movie has a lot of action, its fair share of violence and plenty of great scenes where you feel like you are watching a video game. It is probably not the best family movie, but older kids should be fine with watching it. The romance side of the movie is not a major theme throughout the movie. While some may categorized it as an action fantasy romantic movie, the romance is underplayed enough not to take over the movie and turn it into a chick flick. It is a simple side story that develops nicely and doesn’t overshadow the main storyline.

Overall, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is a movie that will be very entertaining. It may not have you hanging on the edge of your seat, but it keeps movie at a nice pace and the actors do a good job of keeping the story interesting. It is a movie that is perfect for gamers and those who love a good action/adventure story.
