The Plot
Sex and The City 2 is the newest spin off from the incredibly popular television series starring four friends who are living and loving in New York City. This time around the group is leaving the comfort of their beloved city and taking their girly party to the Middle East.
When we last saw the fearsome foursome it was right after Carrie married her true love, Mr. Big. This movie takes place two years later. Carrie, ever the worrier, is concerned that she and Big are nothing more than an old boring married couple and that does not sit well for her. Carrie stills wants to get out there, enjoy life and of course partake in some amazing fashion. She hasn’t changed much despite the two years of marriage.
The other girls have hit roadblocks in their lives, too. Samantha is still the sex kitten that she always has been, trying to figure out how to stay sexy while going through menopause. Miranda is still working most of her life away as a lawyer and being challenged by a difficult senior partner. Charlotte has had all her dreams come true, but motherhood just doesn’t seem to be all she thought it would be.
The story starts with the girls meeting up as they always do and some great flashbacks of when they all met. Then the movie jumps to the wedding of the girl’s best gay friends, Stanford and Anthony. It is a fun time where we get to see the girl’s as we knew them best – laughing, having a good time and just being the divas that they are.
We then see how their lives have really changed since they were just four single gals living in The Big Apple. Samantha is probably the least changed, but we see how she is struggling with growing older while still holding onto her youth in every way she can. Miranda has quit her job since she just could not deal with the senior partner who made her job intolerable. Charlotte is having issues with her new nanny who is incredibly beautiful and who she fears may be after her husband. Carrie is just Carrie. She still worries that her life with Big is not all it could be and that she will never be satisfied even when she has everything she dreamed of.
Samantha is giving a job offer from Sheik Khalid that sets the foursome off on a Middle Eastern adventure. The girls all face their own demons on the trip. Most notably, Carrie runs into her ex Adian, which proves to be a test of whether she is really happy with her life now or not. Samantha gets her hormone drugs confiscated. Carrie hears her new book has gotten negative reviews and is crushed. The girls have their adventures as usual and there is plenty of great fashion, as would be expected. There is a lot focused on the culture clashes between these New Yorkers and the locals. The movie ends with the girls back home and everything is back to normal or as normal as it gets with these ladies.
The Cast
All your favorites are back in Sex And The City 2. Carrie played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Charlotte played by Kristin Davis, Miranda played by Cynthia Nixon and Samantha played by Kim Cattrall. You will also get to see some old favorites like charlotte’s husband Harry, played by Evan Handler and Chris Noth as Carrie’s Mr. Big. There is even the return of Carrie’s old fling Adian played by John Corbett. One surprise guest on this superstar cast list is the great Liza Minnelli who plays herself as the mistress of ceremonies for the opening gay wedding. Liza also treats fans to a surprise performance of “Single Ladies” the hit originally by Beyonce.
The Review
Most of the people that are going to be seeing this movie will be fans of the original show. This is not a hard group to please as they love seeing their favorite characters and getting caught up on their lives. For someone watching this movie without having seen the original television series or the previous movie, it may seem too campy and over the top.
The movie stays true to the characters and the actors all do a great job of keeping the characters we have grown to love real. There is no loss of the usually spirit and life you would expect of something from Sex And The City. True fans will love this and respect the storyline.
Those who are not die hard Sex And The City fans may not enjoy the loose plot and the various sub plots. It can seem to drag on since the movie does come in at about two and a half hours. However, there are plenty of highlights that will keep you entertained even if you aren’t a super fan of the series. Most recognized is the great performance by Liza Minnelli.
The storyline seems to start out being all about the girls and their individual struggles, but somewhere ends up being focused on the men of the Middle East and the culture clashes the girls have. It ends up back where it started, where all the problems are resolved. For some this may seem like a bad attempt at putting together a movie just to keep these characters alive.
This movie is probably best for those who have followed the series. True fans will not mind the lapses in the plot and will get the humor and the style behind the movie, which is in true Sex And The City fashion. Fans will enjoy that the characters are the same old women they always loved and they will enjoy the fact that Carrie is still all about fashion as she trots out some amazing fashions throughout the movie. Overall, Sex And The City 2 would be disappointing for someone who knew nothing about the series, but for a fan it will be a nice delight and a good chance to catch up with some old friends.
