On August 27, 2010 a crime, action and thriller film, Takers, starring Matt Dillon, Paul Walker, Hayden Christensen, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba, Michael Ealy, T.I., and Chris Brown, is released in USA.

The Plot

Takers is a typical cops and robbers style movie. It gives you a glimpse at both sides with a great cast of characters. You will see the side of the smooth criminal gang, pulling off their heists in a flawless, expert manner and then you see the side of the cops who are determined to end the crimes. It is a balance between good and evil that may make you start to wonder what side you are rooting for.

The movie is based on a group of robbers who rob banks. The complete a successful heist that leaves them living the life of luxury. As any criminal, though, this heist that puts them in a life of nothing but the good stuff was not enough. They are quick to start planning their move so they can continue on with the lifestyle that they have set up for themselves.

The team of robbers include Gordon Jennings, John Rahway, A.J. and Jake and Jesse Attica. They come across an amazing job opportunity when a former member of their team, Ghost, is released from prison and tells them about an armored car carrying $20 million that is just waiting to be robbed. This would be the best heist they have every pulled off and it will be their last job.

As the robbers are planning their heist, Officer Jack Welles starts to get closer to finding them. All the past heists were done so well that there has been no evidence or even clues as to who pulled them off. This is thanks to the fact that the robbers treat their jobs as a business and plan everything out exactly, so no evidence is left behind. Then after the heist they disappear so they do not draw any attention.

This job, though, is different. There is a short time frame in which they have to plan and execute the job. They are not as careful. They do not do the meticulous planning that has kept them safe in the past. When they finally do pull off the job they make a costly mistake and Officer Welles is about to discover the robbers that have eluded the police for so long.

The Cast

The cast of the movie is actually well put together. They will entertain fans with the mix of street thug attitude and good looks. People who were fans of “The Wire” will love to see the return of Idris Elba as Gordon Jennings and Glynn Turnman in a small, supporting role.

Some big names hitting the screen in “Takers” include the notorious Chris Brown who has been in the headlines for his now infamous fight and break up with singer Rhianna. Brown also co-produced the film. Also on the screen is T.I. who is fittingly playing ex-con Ghost. The rapper himself just did time in prison for attempting to buy illegal firearms. Other faces you will recognize in the film include veteran actor Matt Dillion as Officer Jack Welles, Paul walker as John Rahway, Hayden Christensen as A.J. and Michael Ealy as Jake Attica.

The Review

The biggest challenge with this movie is that it is a storyline that we have seen many times before. It is the typical cops and robbers movie. However, this movie does bring an excellent cast that will delight those who are huge fans of the main actors, Brown and T.I. In fact, much of the early success of the movie was given to the fact that these two actors drew in large crowds to the premieres.

The highlights of the movie were mainly the action scenes. There is a good fight scene with Hayden Christensen, a chase scene with Chris Brown and a gun fight scene with the Russians that will leave you feeling pretty entertained. In general, the movie is very well written and it is easy to follow the storyline.

With a large cast it is easy to think one person will stand out or overshadow the rest. This doesn’t happen with “Takers.” All the lead actors play off each other well creating a good group atmosphere where everyone gets an equal cut of the action. There is a sub plot for everyone so you never really see more of any one character than the others. It is a great balance that is hard to come by in movies with a rather large cast.

The movie isn’t all focused on the robberies and action. There are side stories where we get to learn a little more about each of the characters. These side plots help to distinguish this movie from your typical cops and robbers flick. It brings life to the characters and helps to draw you into the story more giving the movie some depth that can often be lacking form a movie with so much action and drama.

The plot moves fast, but not too fast. There is a good balance between action and well acted scenes. It is a movie that will keep your attention and not leave you glancing at your watch. You probably won’t have time to wonder when the movie will be over since it is easy to get caught up in the action. Just as things seem to die down and the movie gets into a storyline you get a nice dose of action again to keep you engaged.

Overall, “Takers” can be a good movie for those who love the cops and robbers genre. There is plenty of nice looking leading men, so it could make a great date movie that men and women will both enjoy watching. It is probably best kept for adults, though, due to violence, partial nudity and language. Older teens may find it a fun movie and enjoy seeing some of today’s major music stars in the leading roles.
