On July 14, 2010 a fantasy, comedy film, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, starring Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina, is released in the United States.

The Plot

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice comes from the Walt Disney Studios and in true Disney fashion it mixes reality with fantasy. The story is about a sorcerer and his apprentice who set on an adventure to keep the balance between good and evil. Along the way there are laughs, fun scenes, action and plenty of adventure.

Balthazar Blake is the sorcerer at the center of the story. The story takes place in the modern day and is set in Manhattan. Before seeing the modern day setting, though, there is a little back story on the sorcerer. The movie shows a scene in 700 AD when Balthazar is just an apprentice of Merlin’s, the famous sorcerer. Balthazar is joined by Maxim and Veronica as the great sorcerer’s apprentices. We see as they train and learn everything from Merlin.

There is a battle with Merlin’s mortal enemy, Morgana. Maxim is the one who ends up betraying them to Morgana and starting this fight. During the fight, Maxim flees and Veronica and Morgana are trapped inside a Grimhold. Balthazar learns he must find the Prime Merlinian who would be his successor so he could kill Morgana for good and release Veronica. During his search for the Prime Merlinian, Balthazar traps a young witch, Abigail Williams, a Chinese sorcerer, Sun Lok and Merlin in the Grimhold.

We then get to see Dave Stutler and learn a bit about him. We find out he has a crush on a girl named Becky. Dave ends up wandering into a store owned by Balthazar. This is where Balthazar discovers Dave’s potential and realizes that he is the Prime Merlinian. He tried to explain to Dave his destiny and that he has to help him. Dave ends up releasing Maxim from the Grimhold. Balthazar and Maxim fight and both end up trapped in an urn. Dave runs off and it is not until ten years later when the reunite.

Ten years later the two reunite when maxim and Balthazar are released from the urn. Balthazar has to save Dave as Maxim is threatening him, trying to discover the location of the Grimhold. Balthazar begins teaching Dave everything he knows. There are lessons in magic as they battle various evil beings alone the way. They are trying to get a hold of the mystical Grimhold before maxim can so he does not release Morgana.

At the same time that Dave is studying as the sorcerer’s apprentice he is trying to win the love of his childhood crush, Becky. It turns out that Balthazar is also doing all of this for love of his childhood crush, Veronica.

Eventually, Dave helps Balthazar stop the evil Morgana, release Veronica from the Grimhold where she has spent the past 1000 years and finally gets Becky. Dave really never does get a handle on magic and the movie ends with him being the same clumsy guy he has been throughout the movie.

The Cast

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is known for making movies that work. This is no exception. He has put together an amazing cast that all work in the roles assigned to them. Hollywood blockbuster star, Nicolas Cage, plays the lead as Balthazar. His long standing success at the box office surely helped this movie’s success.

Then there are the other cast members who are just as talented. Jay Baruchel plays Dave. Maxim is played by Alfred Molina. Dave’s love interest, Becky is played by Teresa Palmer and Balthazar’s love interest, Veronica, is played by Monica Bellucci.

The Review

“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is a family friendly movie. It may not be as entertaining for the younger children, but older children will love the magic and mystical side of the movie. The trailer for the movie was a bit lack-luster which really didn’t do the movie justice. It showed some typical scenes that highlight the comedy and the magic part of the movie, but it failed to really grasp the heart of the movie. So, don’t judge this movie just by what you see in the trailer.

“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is the perfect summer movie. It is something the whole family can see and that they will enjoy. The trailer makes you believe the movie will be all about Dave learning spells and magic, but once you start watching the movie you will see the plot goes well beyond that.

The movie has its intense moments that will have you on the edge of your seat. As you would expect from Disney the special effects are amazing. You will be delighted in how they bring the story to life. The movie flows nicely and is very entertaining.

The actors do a terrific job of bringing their characters to life. The acting is truly superb. It is very easy to like the good guys and simple to hate the bad guys. You will have no trouble rooting for Dave to win in the end.

The action scenes in the movie make sense, which doesn’t often happen in movies today. The action is well scripted, edited and works within the storyline of the movie. It doesn’t ever seem like an action scene was thrown in just to keep the story moving or to make the movie more entertaining.

The humor works well in the movie, too. It is timed right a delivered perfectly. You will probably find times throughout the movie where you find yourself laughing hysterically, but that’s okay because everyone else in the theater will be laughing right along with you.

The movie may not be perfect since there are some scenes that may scare the pants off the littlest viewers, but overall “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is a good family movie. It gives you a bit of everything that will keep you entertained and captivated throughout the whole movie. You will walk away with a smile on your face and feel you got your money’s worth with this great flick.
