On June 18, 2010 a computer-animated 3-D film and IMAX 3-D film, Toy Story 3, starring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Blake Clark, Jeff Pidgeon, Don Rickles, Estelle Harris, is released in the United States.

Friday night has been movie night in our house for many years. We went to see the continuing saga of Toy Story, this time the third edition. Woody and the other toys are panicked as Andy grows up enough to go to college. This is a part of the story that we related to quite well. We had already had one of our sons go off to college, and he was the first fan of the family of the Toy Story movies. This story has been going on for quite a while. Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios have done a fantastic job with the third movie in the series. The 2010 edition is directed by long affiliated Lee Unkrich. Lee edited the previous films and was the co-director for the second movie. His touch can certainly be seen as a common thread throughout the three movies.

As the third movie opens, Andy has grown up enough to go off to college. The toys are sure they are going to be put in the attic. Instead the toy crew ends up being donated to a child care center mistakenly, but it’s not all bad. They come face to face with one of the new characters to Toy Story 3, the charming and sweet, strawberry-scented bear Lotso (as in Lots-O-Huggin’, whose voice is done by Ned Beatty). Lotso has pretty much become the leader of the toys at the day care. Lotso keeps everyone in line with time in the toddler room as the punishment for bad behavior. This room is the nightmare of the toys. The kids are young and pretty rough on toys at this age and it is demonstrated quite well in the movie. The movie has a surprise addition to the cast of characters. Barbie’s counterpart, Ken, is brought into the movie (Michael Keaton does Ken’s voice perfectly!) as the right hand man of Lotso.

Woody is sent astray about a block away from home. In a panic because he is no longer with Andy and knowing that Andy’s parents are going to move, Woody believes that life as he knows it has ended for a little while, and then he runs into a kid that is in kindergarten. The kid is a reminder to Woody that a toy’s life is all about being played with by the kids. Andy is not a kid any more. Woody, concerned about his compatriots, goes off to save them.

Woody, Buzz Lightyear and friends were alight in unfamiliar box office terrain Friday, becoming the top grossing animated movie ever worldwide, earning lots of millions worldwide on its opening on  Friday, passing the animated movie, Shrek 2.

The new technology that has allowed the audiences around the world to enjoy these movies has been reflected in the progression seen in the three movies that make up the Toy Story series. As technology moved ahead, Pixel has stayed right on the cutting edge of innovation in this genre. Their contribution to the animation field is not only seen in the movie Toy Story 3, but in the movie Avatar as well. Their work has always been amazing. Now, it is breathtaking. The graphics and animations are so well done that it is very easy to get lost in the story and the fantasy world of children, no matter what age you are.

The family has enjoyed each progression of this series, and even with our oldest in his twenties and our youngest at seventeen, they had to be home for movie night the night we played this movie. The growth of Andy in the movie is such a close reflection of real life for the kids that grew up with this movie series. For the kids who are just getting to enjoy it, we hope they will start with the first and follow the whole story through.

The movies have always offered good morals and lessons about friendship and trust, growing up and figuring problems out. All of these lessons were repeated in real life as our kids matured, and many times the lessons that were so poignant in the movies were reminders to our kids what we were talking about when we stressed right and wrong and what friendship is supposed to be all about.

This series of movies is sadly passing, but this third movie of the series is a fitting end to the story. The crew has done a fantastic job, as always. The first two movies were exciting, and the Toy Story 3, the final movie, is just as exciting. The action packed animation keeps everyone right on the edge of their seat as the toys go from one mishap to the next. Team work is emphasized throughout the movie and it is not a far step of the imagination that this team work is the true life reflection of the production crew, director, the actors whose voices brought this movie to life, and the editing crew that so carefully crafted the final movie into the wonder that it is.

We whole heartedly recommend this movie to the whole family, no matter what age they are. Be sure to start with Toy Story One and move through two and then enjoy the third. The time it takes is well worth it, for all three movies are excellent family entertainment, as we have all come to expect from Disney. Our family revisited old memories as we watched the toys accept Andy growing up and heading to college and then looking forward to playing with other kids, a continuation of what a toy’s purpose is.

It is not surprising to us that this animated movie is one of the top grossing movies in the world. There is a universal appeal to this movie and the story that threads each of the Toy Story movies together. We look forward to introducing our grandchildren to this series some day, when the grandkids come along that is. We are in no hurry!
